Build Your BEST Team (Zig Ziglar Interview)
by Lee J. Colan, Ph.D.
Few people can say they have positively affected millions of lives in very tangible ways. Zig Ziglar is certainly one of them. I had the good fortune of interviewing the King of Motivation. Here is the first of four segments where we discuss mentors and building your BEST team.
Build your own BEST team – Buddies who Encourage Success and Truth. Take some time to review your life and think of people who have made a difference for you and for whom you have made a difference.
Choose wisely those you want on your team. Ensure they offer the energy, truth and positive perspective you need for the success you want. There is no better test than time when it comes to relationships, so start small and build your BEST team slowly. The key is to connect with your BEST team, individually or as a group, on a consistent basis.
Depending on the relationship, we can play the role of teacher and/or student. In either role, we all need people who will support our success. Your BEST team can help you:
Move through adversity. They can help your prevent the natural paralysis that adversity can trigger.
Hone your self-awareness. Depend on your team to give you truthful, constructive feedback to keep beliefs based in reality.
Affirm that your thoughts, words and actions are aligned with your goals.
By letting you help them. As the Proverb says, "In teaching others, we teach ourselves."
Combat negative input you might be receiving at home or work. I love this quote from my Orchestrating Attitude book by an unknown source, "When you are in a bad mental state, think of your mind as a bad neighborhood. Don't go in there alone."
Rehearse challenging situations with friends before you have a live performance.
Remember, having a BEST team is about give and take. Don't give help in hopes of getting something in return… that's trading not giving. There is no scorekeeping on a BEST team if everyone keeps a servant attitude. In the words of Zig Ziglar himself, "You can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want."
