Crazy Calculator
by Lee J. Colan, Ph.D.

Three months ago The LETTER was titled By the Numbers.

In that issue I shared the significance of 14 different numbers and mentioned the fact I really enjoy the heady television drama "Numb3rs." So, I am a sucker for a good mathematical calculation that yields a practical answer (I am no theoretical mathematician).

Unlike the "By the Numbers" article, this one does require a simple calculation. It takes less than a minute and you can work this out as you read. Please do not skip to the answer at the bottom... I'd hate for you to ruin the fun. It starts out a bit goofy, but I think you might be in awe of the accuracy of the result.

  • First, pick the number of times a week that you would like to have chocolate (more than once but less than 10).
  • Multiply this number by 2 (just to be bold)
  • Add 5
  • Multiply it by 50 (here’s where you might start needing a calculator).
  • If you have already had your birthday this year add 1759. If you have not, then add 1758.
  • Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.

You should now have a three digit number. The first digit of this was your original number (i.e., how many times you want to have chocolate each week).

The next two numbers are... YOUR AGE!

Do not ask me how it works, but this is the only year it will work.

Okay, now let’s forget about your age and focus on your success! Check out my latest book, Winners ALWAYS Quit, for seven pretty good habits you can swap for really great results. It will help you quit today so you can win tomorrow.

So here’s a much more simple and practical equation: Read it + Apply it = WIN!
