Reasons Organizational Change Efforts Fail

Bookmark and Share

Asking for Behavior X while rewarding Behavior Y.
(systems and processes do not reinforce desired changes)
Overplanning.
(analysis paralysis = inaction)
Going for the home run.
(ignoring small, quick successes to build momentum for larger, long-term successes)
Employees not enlisted in process.
(lack of early and constant communication to and from employees)
The devil is in the details.
(initiatives and discussions kept at a conceptual level)
Diffused accountability.
(waiting for "them" to change first)
"People are our most valuable resource" is just a saying.
(focus on technical systems rather than people systems)
Lack of compelling business and personal reasons to change.

More energy and resources spent on the resistors of change than on the champions for change.

Throwing out the baby with the bath water.
(changing everything rather than identifying those things that must change to meet new business objectives)
