  • rigorously selected and respected experts with an average of 25 years experience each.

Below are the profiles of some of our featured Expert Partners.

Norman Bodek is one of The L Group’s select Expert Partners. Vancouver, Washington, publishing, training, and consulting company. He discovered and published the works of the truly great Japanese manufacturing geniuses: Dr. Shigeo Shingo and Taiichi Ohno, the inventors of the Toyota Production System now called JIT and Lean manufacturing and many others. From his numerous trips to Japan he introduced to the western world the Kaizen Blitz, SMED, TPM, QFD, Hoshin Kanri, Poka-Yoke, Visual Factory and other new manufacturing methodologies that have helped companies improve their quality, and productivity. In 1988 he initiated the Shingo Prize for Manufacturing Excellence with Professor Vern Buehler at Utah State University.

Most recently he co-authored a book with Bunji Tozawa titled The Idea Generator - Quick and Easy Kaizen. The Quick and Easy Kaizen system recognizes that every worker has hidden creative talent locked inside. This system becomes a powerful tool for management to bring forth lots and lots of small but significant improvement ideas from all their employees.

This quote from Norman captures the value of his work, “Every person at work should be empowered and involved in the improvement process through their own creative ideas to make their work easier, more interesting, build their problem solving skills, while at the same time improving communications throughout the organization, improving customer service, improving quality, improving safety, improving productivity and bringing new excitement and joy into the workplace. Not tapping into employees’ ideas is like sitting on top of a gold mine and feeling poor.”

Through newsletters, books and 50 industrial study missions to Japan Norman discovered, brought over, had translated and popularized many of the Japanese quality tools, techniques, and technologies that transformed American industry in the mid 1980's and 1990's.

Norman has been a frequent instructor and speaker on customer service, productivity, quality and process improvement for organizations including the American Management Association, President Reagan's Productivity Conference, Institute of Industrial Engineers, American Society for Quality, as well as at hundreds of conferences, seminars, and in plant training events.

pat-townsend Pat Townsend is one of The L Group’s select Expert Partners. He is both an experienced practitioner of, and an international speaker on, leadership, performance excellence, and innovation. Pat led the definition, implementation and maintenance of two highly successful quality/leadership processes – as chronicled in Commit to Quality (Wiley, 1986) and Quality Makes Money (ASQ Press, 2005).

With his wife/co-author, Joan Gebhardt, he has had a total of eight books and over 400 articles published. Among the original ideas that he has introduced are the Complete Quality Process and the Leadership/Teamship/Followership Continuum. CQP is a structured approach to continual improvement that begins with 100% employee involvement and incorporates all appropriate quality tools. Six Sigma, Lean, ISO, Kaizen, etc. are the subsets; CQP is the superset. Understanding the LTFC makes it possible for an organization to implement effective leadership at every level.

Leadership, Pat believes, is “the creation of an environment in which others can self-actualize in the process of completing the job.” Of the three Leadership Priorities (Accomplish the mission, Take care of your people, and Create more leaders), he teaches that it is the third one that determines an individual’s personal legacy and an organization’s long-term viability. His book Five-Star Leadership (Wiley, 1997) was the first book by a major publisher to explore the link between military leadership and the leadership skills needed in today’s corporate setting.

Pat has spoken on the topics of leadership, performance excellence, and innovation around the globe and, with his wife/co-author, has conducted 2- and 3-day workshops for senior management teams eager to improve their own leadership skills and to investigate ways to improve their organizations. His experience as a fulltime employee charged with the responsibility of directing the every-day evolution of two separate improvement processes insures that the advice he gives is rooted in reality.

Pat has a Bachelor’s Degree from Marquette University and a Master’s Degree from the United States Naval Postgraduate School. He served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps for 20 years. He was a member of the committee that defined the Malcolm Baldrige Award in 1987.
